Dr. Carlos Ochoa is an architect with specialization on sustainable environmental design analysis. He has a PhD and MSc from Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, where he researched on use of daylight for human comfort and architectural planning of intelligent facade elements. He is also knowledgeable of sustainable design of climate-adaptable buildings using both passive and active technologies. Further specialization in human-based experimentation was acquired during his postdoc at Eindhoven University of Technology. Other noteworthy achievements include development of NewFacades, a computer selection tool for the early architectural design stages. Very few examples of such tools exist.
Design research has been carried out through specialized computer simulation tools such as EnergyPlus and Radiance. Other tools he has used include CFD programs, and supporting tools such as Visual Basic, AutoCAD and 3D Studio.
Currently he is working as senior researcher in the FP7 project MEEFS, which deals with the design of a prefabricated and adaptable retrofitting system for energy efficiency in Europe (http://www.meefs-retrofitting.eu/). His tasks include coordinating between different partners, performing computer simulations for climatic strategies and developing an automated selection system for application of the retrofit system.
He has published in different scientific journals and participated in international conferences like Plea and Cisbat.
Past design experience in an architectural practice consists mainly on consultancy for residential architecture and participation in design competitions.
